Hwang Dong-hyuk said that if the spin-off of Squid Game does take place, it will reveal the events that unfolded between the first and second seasons.

Here's What We Know

"If I create a spin-off, it will be a story that takes place between the first and second seasons. There was a three-year gap between the first and second seasons," Dong-hyuk told IndieWire. "So, I want to show what they were doing in that time."

The second season takes place three years after the events of the first season of Squid Game, after Gi-hoon (Lee Jong-jae) has won the game. We don't know what happened during those three years, but we do know that he turned down a trip to the United States and instead decided to return to the games to try and stop them once and for all.

The third and final season will show the continued involvement of Gi-hoon along with a host of new players, and this time the games are even deadlier. The trailer, shown at Netflix's annual Tudum event, featured two particularly interesting scenes where we see the Frontman (Lee Byung-hong) taking off his mask and Gi-hoon in a tuxedo, hinting at his next victory.

Although this is the end of Dong-hyuk's Squid Game story, David Fincher (known for his work on Fight Club, Seven, Zodiac) is going to make an American version for Netflix. However, the details are still unknown.

Season 3 of Squid Game is released on Netflix on 27 June.
